We will be in a nice chalet just for our group at an altitude of 1600 meters in the Jahorina ski resort at 35 kilometres from Sarajevo. The place where the 1984 winter Olympics took place, how cool is that! In the evening we will cook and eat together, do crazy group games, every evening sauna etc. In the daytime there will be flash mob style assignments – and a lot of snow fun, obviously.
Location
The ski area is not super big and not super small. There are several ropeways and chair lifts and a good number of slopes for beginners and advanced skiers/boarders. If the road conditions allow us, we will also make once or twice a day trip to the Bjelasnica ski resort at the other side of Sarajevo, and one day we might visit the slopes at Mount Igman in the morning and then we’ll spend the afternoon in the beautiful city of Sarajevo. The Crazy Snow Camp is your chance to discover a bit of life in Bosnia, a fascinating place and one of the most beautiful and mountainous countries of Europe. The war in Bosnia ended 18 years ago and it is exciting to see how the diverse parts of Bosnian society are now skiing and boarding together. Snow unites :-) and we can be part of that! In the last 10 years (and maybe before also, but I didn’t see those statistics) in average the snow conditions in Sarajevo were excellent in the last two weeks of February and in the first two weeks of March, so we should be good. However, if you come by car you should have winter tyres and bring snow chains.
Chalet
The chalet is quite luxury and has double/twin bedrooms , an open kitchen in the dining room, two bathrooms and a sauna. There will be max. 8 people in our group. Inside the house clothing is optional (except in the sauna obviously, where for reasons of hygiene it is not permitted to wear anything -so no swimwear or underwear either). No smoking in the house.
Workshops
There is space and time for workshop-like activities, so if you would like to share some of your knowledge or skills, feel free! Maybe you want to teach us some capoeira, do a photo session, or make us sing the traditionals of your native culture? Just some ideas… it really can be anything. Another fun activity that we’ll be doing together is… cooking! (and cleaning afterwards…)
Cost
If we complete 8 people, price for one week is EUR 375 per person for accommodation, breakfasts and dinners.
That is cheap!!!! Also the ski passes in this area are very cheap (around 110 Euro for 7 days). However, don’t come if you are only interested in an affordable winter holiday. The Crazy Snow Camp is all about the group, spending fun evenings together, doing crazy games, etc.
Couples
If you are a couple, please understand that in the Crazy Snow Camp you can not behave like a couple. Subject to availability, you can get a room with a double bed if you want (in general the rooms are allocated through a lottery) but apart from that, you are expected to participate in all activities and group life as individuals and not as a couple. Yes you will be hugging – in the numerous group hugs! So be prepared to sit each at the other extreme of the group table during dinner, and accept that someone else than yourself might be giving a salt scrub to your partner in the sauna.
How to get there
Jahorina is at 35 km from Sarajevo airport and railway station, 300 km from Belgrade airport, 300 km from Dubrovnik airport. Direct trains to Sarajevo from Belgrade, Zagreb and Budapest; express buses to Sarajevo from many places across Europe. By car you would probably drive to Zagreb or Belgrade, take the Zagreb-Belgrade highway and then turn to Sarajevo.
From The Netherlands and NRW there is a ride share available, approx. EUR 130 two-way per person. Most probably, as time passes by, ride shares from other directions will be added.
Don’t miss these 7 nights on the mountain in beautiful Bosnia!
SO LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN TOGETHER!
Interested?
If you want to participate in this event, then you’re out of luck… It is a past event! Please check out the upcoming Crazy Mountain Camps or Crazy Snow Camps! And if you sign up for the newsletter I’ll keep you updated about new Crazy Camps.

The program might look something like this: First day We’ll all meet in the afternoon at the bus stop in the village. Walking up through the canyon to the hut (2 hours, T2/T3). The farmer will transport our luggage with their improvised little cargo ropeway. Second day As a warming up we will make a hike (T2/T3) that is not very long and not very technical. We’ll do some meditations during the hike to integrate ourselves in the landscape, and we’ll have a picnic in the fields. Third day A longer hike (T3) that takes us through pathes of forest and through a neighboring valley. We will reward ourself with a swim in a wild mountain lake at the highest point of our hike! Fourth day No big hikes; rather chillax, do some meditations and yoga sessions. Also we might explore our creativity, expressing ourselves interacting with the mountains and trees, through for example photography, making rock structures, or whatever inspires us. It’s about the process, not about the result. Fifth day A long hike, 8 to 9 hours, T3, that will bring us to a unique natural phenomenon: a river in a natural tunnel Sixth day Another day dedicated to meditation, yoga and bodywork. Seventh day Vacate the hut in the morning and descent back into civilisation. After this hike: the farewell hug in the village!
Weather conditions in the mountains can change fast and often. For this reason, the program can be changed according to what is safe and enjoyable.
One thing about hiking in groups. Keep in mind that a ‘stronger’ person can adapt to a ‘slower’ person, but a ‘slower’ person cannot adapt to a ‘stronger’ person. So, when we hike in a group, we’ll set the capabilities of the ‘slower’ group members as standard while the ‘stronger’ people will have the satisfaction of applying their social skills by adapting to the group :-)

The following cities have a convenient (sometimes night train) connection, only ONE change needed at the end of the trip: Amsterdam, Berlin, Bologna, Budapest, Dijon, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Genova, Graz, Hamburg, Hannover, Köln, Leipzig, Ljubjana, Milano, Munich, Paris, Salzburg, Stuttgart, Utrecht, Vienna, Zagreb (all as per spring 2024).
And here is a small selection of cities from where you would have to change trains only twice: Barcelona, Belgrade, Gdansk, Kopenhagen, Lyon, Marseille, Prague, Rome and Warsaw.
Disclaimer: This mobile network situation was how it was in the past years and the last time we were here it was still like this. However I can’t guarantee that no telecom provider would put a new antenna somewhere that would change things. In all honesty, this is very unlikely because there is no economic interest to put extra antennas in this very empty valley.
The hiking programme for the Crazy Mountain Balance Camp might look something like this:
Day 1 We’ll all meet in the afternoon at the bus stop in the village. Walking up to the hut (T1). Luggage can be brought by jeep (but not all the way to the house, still some 5 mins to walk with luggage). Day 2 An easy hike that is not over steep slopes and always on non-challenging trails (T1 and T2). We’ll have a picnic in the fields, enjoy the magnificent views and do a meditation during the hike, bonding with the mountains . This day will serve as a warming up. Day 3 A long hike, technically more challenging also (T3, small parts of T4). We will leave early in the morning, hike to an incredibly beautiful mountain lake, picnic, meditate and have a swim. If we feel fit, we will hike to a 2.500m high summit, and we will hike back to our hut. In total this excursion will take us some 10 to 12 hours. Day 4 No big hikes; rather chillax, do some meditations and yoga sessions. Also we might explore our creativity, expressing ourselves interacting with the mountains and trees, through for example photography, making rock structures, or whatever inspires us. It’s about the process, not about the result. Day 5 From the hut we will directly ascend a summit that is ‘only’ 2.350m high, but the ascent is steep. The hike to the summit (yoga at the summit!) and at the other side down (intermezzo: swimming and sunbath at another lake) and then back through the valley will take us some 12 hours again. (T3, small parts of T4). Day 6 Another day dedicated to meditation, yoga and bodywork. Day 7 Vacate the hut in the morning, than yoga and maybe a small hike. After this hike and a last meditation: the farewell group hug!
